Welcome to Async Python

Where AI requests travel together without causing traffic jams. Many lanes, zero waiting.

One slow truck shouldn't stop the whole city! That's why we built the Async Highways β€” every request gets its own lane. 🚦

The Traffic Jam Problem 🚨

In a synchronous system, requests wait in a single lane. One slow task blocks every single one behind it.

See how Image Gen is holding everyone back for a whole 8 seconds? In a real app that means every user waits. That's a city-wide traffic jam! 😀

The Async Highway Opens ✨

Toggle between modes. Watch what changes when you unlock extra lanes.

One request at a time. Still waiting on image gen… ⏳

Popy

One lane means everyone waits in line. Even a quick weather request has to sit behind slow image generation!

What is await? ⏳

The await keyword means: "I'll sit politely here while others keep working." Toggle to see the difference.

🚫 Blocking: while Weather waits for the cloud, ALL other workers freeze. Nothing moves.
Code
@app.get("/weather")
async def get_weather():
    data = await ask_weather_service()
    return data

While ask_weather_service() is slow, the city keeps handling other requests. ⚑

The Concurrency Race 🏎️

6 AI requests enter the city at the same time. How does each system handle them?

Async Powers AI Systems 🧠

Every modern AI app uses async under the hood. Without it, a chatbot serving 1,000 users would grind to a halt β€” one slow OpenAI response would freeze everybody.

Popy

While one AI worker waits for OpenAI to respond, thousands of other requests keep flowing. That's how ChatGPT serves millions of people at once! 🀯

Async FastAPI in Action ⚑

Hover any glowing keyword to see what it does in AI City.

@app.get("/weather")
async def get_weather():
data = await ask_cloud()
return data

πŸ‘† Hover a keyword to hear Popy explain it.

Popy

While ask_cloud() is fetching weather data, I can handle dozens more requests on the highway at the exact same time! ☁️⚑

🚨

Stabilize AI City!

A massive request surge β€” 1,000 users just connected at once. You must choose a routing system to keep the city alive.

Build your own Async Highway πŸ›£οΈ

Four cozy steps. By the end you'll have a real async FastAPI route handling multiple AI tasks simultaneously β€” just like a real city.

  1. 1

    Set up your Python world

    Create a folder, spin up a virtual environment, and install the two packages you need.

    mkdir async-city && cd async-city
    python -m venv .venv
    source .venv/bin/activate   # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
    pip install aiohttp fastapi "uvicorn[standard]"
  2. 2

    Write your first async function

    The async keyword turns a normal function into a highway-ready one that can pause politely.

    import asyncio

    async def fetch_weather():
        await asyncio.sleep(1)   # pretend it's slow
        return {"city": "Citypopy", "temp": "22Β°C"}

    asyncio.run(fetch_weather())
  3. 3

    Run many tasks in parallel

    asyncio.gather() is the foreman β€” it sends all tasks to their own lane at the same time.

    async def main():
        # All three run simultaneously!
        weather, image, chat = await asyncio.gather(
            fetch_weather(),
            generate_image(),
            get_ai_reply(),
        )
        return weather, image, chat
  4. 4

    Plug it into FastAPI

    Change def to async def in any FastAPI route and it instantly becomes highway-compatible.

    from fastapi import FastAPI

    app = FastAPI()

    @app.get("/city-report")
    async def city_report():
        weather, image, chat = await asyncio.gather(
            fetch_weather(), generate_image(), get_ai_reply()
        )
        return {"weather": weather, "image": image, "chat": chat}
πŸ’‘

Pro tip

Never use time.sleep() inside async functions β€” it blocks the whole highway! Always use await asyncio.sleep() instead.

βœ“ Non-blocking
Popy

You understand async! πŸ†

You now know how AI systems avoid blocking, serve thousands of users at once, and keep the city running smoothly.

✦ async keeps city moving✦ await = polite pause✦ parallel = everyone served
